Introduction:
Introduce the idea of compare/contrast to the class. Practice inputting data using a spreadsheet and constructing a column chart or bar graph to interpret the results of the data. Begin to brainstorm ideas of how and where to collect data.

Activity:
Day 1:
1.  Divide the class into 4 groups of five.
2.  Each group will survey 50 students for a total of 200 students in school as to their favorite music genre Pop, R&B, Rap, Rock, or Country.

Day 2:
1.  Use a spreadsheet to display the data collected from the survey.
2.  Enter the data in the first two columns of a spreadsheet, as shown in the example.
3.  Each cell on a spreadsheet is labeled using a letter to indicate the column and a number to indicate the row.
4.  Highlight the data in cells A2:B6. The expression A2:B6 refers to the rectangular array of cells with A2 and B6 at the corners.
5.  Use the insert menu to insert a graph. Select a column chart or bar graph, as the type of graph. Then choose options for your graph, such as a title and labels for the horizontal and vertical axes. To change other features of your graph after it has been created, double click on the part of the graph that you wish to change and adjust the formatting.

Day 3:
1. Use the column chart or bar graph to compare the data of the different music genre (types).
2.  Each group will meet to prepare for their presentations.
3. Presentations of survey findings.

Wrap-up
Reinforce what they have learned from the lesson.

Evaluate and Revise

Student Performance
Students will be evaluated on group presentations, interpretation and findings of data, and their ability to create a bar graph. Students will evaluate group presentations using rubrics.

Media Effectiveness
Was the multimedia projector useful in promoting class discussion?  Did it prove useful for visual learners?
Did the spreadsheet activity work well amongst the class?  Was it easy to use?  Was it helpful for kinesthetic learners?
Was the bar graph helpful in focusing student responses’?

Instructor Performance
Did the lesson run smoothly?  Was it well-planned?
Did the class respond well to the lesson?
Were the learning objectives achieved?
Could the lesson be improved in the future?
