Philosophy of Teaching

Every child deserves an adequate education regardless of his or her background, race or gender. Children who do not receive enough attention at home struggle to survive in society. A child who is provided a good education grows up to be a doctor, lawyer, politician, and other important people. Teachers can help a troubled child and keep him from becoming a criminal and abuser. Teachers give children a chance at the future by teaching them compassion, motivation, and real life skills, an accomplishment of a lifetime. I love to be around children and to be a part of their maturation. The children look to me for guidance. I want to make a difference in a child’s life. A quote by Charles Platt captures these abilities teachers possess. “Compassionate teachers fill a void left by working parents who aren't able to devote enough attention to their children. Teachers don't just teach; they can be vital personalities who help young people to mature, to understand the world and to understand themselves. A good education consists of much more than useful facts and marketable skills." I want to give each child the opportunity that is sometimes not offered at home, and open children’s eyes to the possibilities that await them.

I will get to know my students’ backgrounds and interests, and what motivates them. This will help me to build a relationship with them and is also helpful in getting them to become engaged in the learning process. This will build their trust in me as their teacher.

I will encourage them to do their best, to be proud ofwhom they are, to follow their dreams.  I want children to know that they can do anything they want to do when they put their mind to it. I will help them to develop a deep love and respect for themselves and others. I will encourage students to treat people the way they want to be treated. I tell my students that everyone is equal. I tell my students that I will treat them as an adult as long as they act like an adult.

I will teach actively by demonstrating skills, explaining concepts and assignments, conducting participatory activities, and reviewing when necessary.  I will have portfolio, projects, group work, individual work, problem-based, and hands-on learning in order to make children active learners.  These learning activities will teach them to be organized and responsible students.  I will teach children to think critically and creatively, to practice good leadership, and to be responsible citizens. The way my students can achieve this is by making them involved in the learning process.

Working in groups will allow students to bring their own stories, real world experiences, and ideas into the classroom and to learn from each other, and respect each others’ differences. I will give my students opportunities to relate their learning and critical thinking skills to social challenges and problems outside of the classroom walls. This will help them to grow as individuals. It will also enable them to build their self esteem and problem solving skills.

Exams and quizzes test the students’ knowledge of standard practices; group projects challenge students to follow the entire process on problems they have not seen solved in the classroom. This provides them with the opportunity to practice applying their skills under the guidance of the instructor before having to apply them in their own individual careers. In addition it provides the instructor with the opportunity to assess and correct the students’ writing proficiencies.

I must have good classroom management skills so organizing and conducting my class will run smoothly.  I will create a friendly classroom so that my students will feel comfortable to talk to me about anything. I will set an example and be considerate, patient, and sympathetic which will show that I care about the student as an individual.  I will be friendly, outgoing, open-minded, and sympathetic to all my students. With this kind of character I feel that my students will be comfortable to talk to me. When I am in the classroom I am their teacher. If they need someone to talk to, I am willing to listen. I am open-minded to what they have to say and I always give my students the benefit of the doubt. I do emphasize to them I will not tolerate dishonesty.

I will maintain a classroom atmosphere that is conducive to learning and encourages dialogue.  I will arrange students to sit in a circle rather than in a row behind each other’s backs. I will use audio-visual equipment, the World Wide Web and other electronic resources. I know to be flexible and will adapt my teaching whenever necessary.

I will challenge my students to broaden their minds by enhancing their awareness of culture, diversity, and individual differences. I will ask them to think about societal pressure faced by differences among cultures.

A teacher is a professional learner. I learn every day that teaching is a learning experience. In the educational setting, the methods in which you perform your job are always changing. A teacher is always learning, adapting his

or her point of view, and using his or her imagination. I will continue to take courses and to participate in professional

development activities. These activities will help me to remain current in my field. I am always looking for new teaching

strategies, classroom management or discipline techniques. I welcome constructive criticism.

I will collaborate with colleagues, parents, and other professionals to solve problems, to share resources, ideas, and to do whatever it takes to help my students to reach their maximum potential.

To me, choosing a career in teaching is the most important job one can hold. No matter the background of the child, his race or his gender, a teacher is able to give a child a chance at future success. That is a gift of a lifetime that no other career can provide.
